Sir Harold Hillier Gardens
In den Sir Harold Hillier Gardens schlägt die Schönheit der Landschaftsgestaltung, der Waldgebiete und Wege Besucher unweigerlich in Bann und regt zu Höhenflügen der Phantasie an.
Die imposante Sammlung wurde 1953 vom namhaften Pflanzenkenner Sir Harold Hillier gegründet und umfasst auf einem 72 ha großen Gelände über 42.000 Pflanzen aus gemäßigten Klimazonen der Erde.
Die Anlage ist das ganze Jahr über geöffnet und besticht mit enormer saisonaler Vielfalt. Besonders interessant sind die 12 nationalen Pflanzensammlungen, das
200 m lange Sommerblumenbeet, der Bereich um den Teich, der Sumpfgarten, der größte Wintergarten seiner Art Europas und ein Lehrgarten für Kinder, der 2006 von Sir David Attenborough eröffnet wurde.
Das ganze Jahr hindurch finden Events und Ausstellungen statt, darunter auch die alljährliche „Art in the Garden", bei der vom 24. Mai bis 26. Oktober rund 200 Skulpturen in der Gartenanlage aufgestellt werden.
Ferner gibt es ein ausgezeichnetes Restaurant im Besucherpavillon, eine Sommerteestube, einen Andenkenladen und ein Pflanzenzentrum.
Außer am ersten und am zweiten Weihnachtsfeiertag ist die Gartenanlage täglich von 10.00 Uhr bis 18.00 Uhr (bzw. Einbruch der Dunkelheit) geöffnet.
Reservierungen für Gruppen und die Buchung spezielle Führungen müssen mindestens zwei Wochen im Voraus erfolgen.
Weite Teile der Anlage sind für Behinderte zugänglich. Elektromobile und Rollstühle können gemietet werden.
